I’ve always been fascinated by what we can learn about the macroscopic properties of materials by studying their microscopic structures. In university I’ve studied and made biomaterials that mimic the properties of arteries, and I’ve examined the structures of construction materials I’ve used in the machine shop to understand why they were acting the way they were.
But understanding the microscopic structural properties of every day materials are just as interesting, and perhaps unexpected. Here are some items lying on my friend’s sewing table. Even household chores are fascinating when examined via foldscope!
See if you can guess what these are before looking at the answers at the bottom!
