Foldscope with Sample Slides Created By SPIE Techno India Team We are grateful to Professor Manu Prakash and his Foldscope team at Stanford University for sending us the set of foldscopes. In a short span of time, our SPIE Techno India Student chapter members have assembled the instrument and have started looking at various objects through the Foldscope. We are all having a really enriching experience looking through the microscope and being able to perceive the known world in a not so familiar way. It gives us pleasure to share the pictures of a few of our findings.
Scales of Butterfly
Squamous Epithelial tissue
Cross Section of veins of Aegle Marmelos Leaf
Human Blood Sample We are also planning to organize a Foldscope exhibition titled, “Life Under a microscope” during our annual Scientific Festival, Wavicle. During the exhibition, all the microscopic photos taken by us with the Foldscope will be put up on display for the public, and especially for school students. We will try to make the exhibition very interactive by including videos of living cells and by organising a fun “Identify the image” contest. We will be having live samples on hand, in order to demonstrate to the guests, the power of the Foldscope and to give them the chance to have first-hand experience with it.
On Friday, 18 th November, 2016 the Techno India SPIE Student Chapter conducted a very successful outreach programme at Malancha High School in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India. Our chapter members taught to the students of class 8 and 9 interesting topics pertaining to astronomy and optics. We also conducted a fun quiz, where the winners were presented with small prizes. This was followed by an extensive practical demonstration involving different optical phenomena. The activity which stole the show was the one involving the Foldscope! The children, who all hail from an economically challenged background had a great time looking through the foldscope and getting a feel of the microscopic world for the very first time. We have posted some snaps from the outreach activity as well. Many thanks to the Foldscope Team once again!
