For whatever reason, “let’s go for a walk” is met with screams of protest from my 4yo. So I try to incorporate things that appeal to him to make it less of a hostage situation. Yesterday, I suggested we collect items that might be interesting to look at through the Foldscope, a tactic that has yet to fail me.
His favourite part? Preparing slides. Because what kid doesn’t love stickers! We collected various objects from around the neighbourhood. After we looked at them through the microscope, we talked about what we saw. Okay, to be honest, I asked him what he saw and then I tried to google something interesting to tell him about what he saw. He is the scientist in the family, not me. We even read that you can attempt to find tardigrades by soaking moss (something we coincidentally picked up!) so we have our fingers crossed that we’ll find one. My son has plans to name it “Window” and keep it as a pet. Why Window? Because he’s 4 and thought it was hilarious because he was staring out a window at the time.
Here are a few things we collected:
Dandelion fluffies!
Leaf cells
Moss I haven’t posted on here yet how amazing the Foldscope is because, to be honest, we are not real scientists doing the awesome scientific things we see others doing on here. But I cannot express what an amazing tool this thing is to have in our house! My son was three when we were lucky enough to be sent one, and I was amazed to see that it was actually sturdy enough that he could help fold it without fear of it breaking. We have taken it to the park and on hikes. We have spent entire dinners looking at bits of our food through the Foldscope. It has enriched my son’s learning in a fun, hands on way, and has offered him a whole other viewpoint of the world. And like I said at the start of my post, it gets him outside!
