Our first scientist took home a Foldscope over the weekend. He did a great job recording his thought process and observations while exploring the microscopic world.
Class started today with him reporting his findings and sharing the slides he made with his fellow scientists.
We also took a video of the ant he found in the garbage on his way into class. In the video we are discussing what we are looking at and trying to figure out why it looks like the ant has three eyes.
After looking more closely I think there are only two eyes, but I’m not sure. The third “spot” may be a smudge on the (tape) cover slip, or possibly something else?
I’m going to share with the students tomorrow the anatomy of an ant and the Ocelli, three simple simple eyes that detect light, that some ants have. We studied eyes earlier this year, so this fits in nicely. ASU School of Life Sciences has a great site (www.askabiologist.asu.edu/explore/ant-anatomy) that includes information on ant anatomy & vision.
