I visited the Baylands Preserve in Palo Alto today, with a group led by Manu Prakash. We found all kinds of cool critters in the mud and water, but my favorite spot was a sulfurous little puddle next to a sign for the Harriet Mundy marsh. In every drop there were multitudes of frolicking animalcules, blissfully unaware that a fellow eukaryote over a million times their size was videotaping them. The long green strands are cyanobacteria.
Many thanks to Manu for a great day at the marsh!
