 So I discovered a little too late that my pillow actually is down-stuffed, and decided to look at one of the feathers under the Foldscope. There’s a lot of detail here; you can see individual fibers from the microscope, which I thought was great. The light from my laptop made it easier for me to see the feather clearly, and I was able to use my iPhone camera to take a photo! On a side note, it’s very interesting to think about the acceptability of organic down as a filling today as well, especially given the controversy surrounding how we harvest the feathers (I got the pillow from IKEA, which is making a conscious anti-cruelty effort) from birds.
