Hey there foldscope friends! I wanted to share my Point Lobos experience with you because there were lots of things to see and explore!
Point Lobos is a State Natural Reserve located in Monterey County, California along the Central California coast. It is absolutely beautiful and people come from all over the world to get a glimpse of the breathtaking views and wildlife that can be found there. The reserve has beaches, tide pools, walking trails, etc.

I wanted to share some pictures that I took there to give you some insight into the types of things that you might come across.
My classmates 🙂
Gumboot chiton!
Another chiton… there were so many!
Awesome cove along the trails……
There were so many little caves!
Here are some harbor seals hauled out on the beach.
My favorite find of the trip! The colors on this snail shell were so pretty! Found this little guy hiding in one of the tide pools.
Brittle star!
I wanted to take a look at some of the things that I found using my foldscope. My favorite thing about the foldscope is that you use your phone as the viewing lense, which makes it super easy to snap pictures that you can share with others! Below are some of the foldscope pictures I took from the trip.
The four pictures below are foldscope pictures taken of a piece of a mole crab exoskeleton. In the bottom right image you can see the corner of the exoskeleton that has little setae on the ends of it. A closeup of the setae can be seen in the image on the bottom left. Pretty awesome! I believe the top right image shows a few grains of sand that were on the exoskeleton.
I then tried to look at a sea shell using the foldscope. Below are pictures of the shell taken with my phone using the foldscope.
<< Regular view of the shell…
If you haven’t gotten to experience Point Lobos for yourself, I highly suggest you make a trip out there! I had a great time exploring, and the foldscope allowed us to explore the site at a microscopic level that would otherwise not have been possible! Foldscopes are so convenient and I am so excited about owning my very own foldscope! Big thanks to the team that created them and provided them to students like myself to use throughout our studies! 🙂
