By using the foldscope we were able to detect the presence of a parasite in blood. This is extremely useful in the field since these microscopes are so cheap and disposable after contamination. At RIT I am currently studying to be a scientific photographer so we use many imaging techniques and specialized equipment. Using the foldscope was a challenge because we are so used to high quality optics and a device such as this would not produce the norm we have been exposed to. However when accessing these optics we found they do their job and make it incredibly feasible for a scientist or doctor to identify malaria on the field. Even better for students too since these are such simple microscopes they make learning about depth and slide preparation in a visual manner which in my opinion is far better than a text book.
