I decided to have the mindset of a maker. When making something, at first we jump to unlimited options but my mind jumped to where are limitations placed and why. I began to think about the distinction between plant cells and other types of cells, and cell walls. A cell wall helps to give support and protection, as well as acting as a filtering mechanism.
In thinking of building something in bioengineering, I am wrestling with ways in which we must have boundaries on our creation. Boundaries are often seen as limiting and for some people even a negative thing, but as nature shows us- boundaries help to support and provide protection to the creation. The intricacies of how cells put up walls, where they put them up, and why plants have continued to use cell walls were questions I was thinking through as I looked at slides of plants. In future creations, it is important to give ourselves boundaries both in a philosophical sense, and also important to think through how the use of walls on a microscopic level gives organisms possibilities that would not be available otherwise.
What are the pros and cons to working with organisms that have cell walls? Why has evolution continued to support cell walls? How much more difficult is it to use organisms with cell walls vs. without? As bioengineers on a larger scale- when must we decide to put boundaries up? How can we work with the government to create policy that is used for safety and protection, rather than for restriction?
A close view of a purple leaf. From the outside it all looks like a uniform color, but a close up view gives us insight into the separation from one part of the flower to the other.
Interesting to note the separation between one part of the leaf to the other. The design of separation.
