We visited UTEC, the University of Engineering and Technology, in Lima, Peru, where we held a workshop for graduate students interested in foldscope. Here are a couple of highlights!
There will be blood! We were brainstorming what samples to look at when one woman asked about blood. Haha, there is always some bold soul willing to bleed! Without hesitation, she grabbed a stapler (“cleaned” it) and pricked her finger-tip for examination. 😀
Hair Comparisons As this was going on, another interesting sample investigation was happening in the back of the room. Hair samples are often a nice first sample, as it is easy to find and mount. But these two women put a twist on it by creating a comparative study, brown hair versus grey!
Moldy Coffee And finally, a third highlight from this workshop was the discovery of some ancient coffee. Forgotten on a desk, accumulating mold, here are some sights from the moldy mixture…
By the time we left, the sun had set. Thank you UTEC & everyone who came, hope to hear more from you all!
Until next time! Rebecca
