An awareness and training Programme was organised at Bethel Highschool at Moirang Purel,Imphal East District on ‘Introducing Foldscope.’ On 22nd September, 2018, accompanied by project fellow T.Memsana (M.Sc. Botany) and project staff and my Ph.D. scholar. Rural setup of the said school with students hailing from poor and minority community was the top priority for our workshop.Passing though the rural picturesque subtropical lushgreen landscape ,we started from Manipur University. When passed on the rough pebbled road ,soon we realised how difficult must be the walking on these rugged structures by tiny thin limbs. On reaching the school after almost two hours journey ,we were welcomed by the principal and teachers of the school.Soon we got ready for the workshop. The programme included an introductory speech by Prof Asha Gupta.Making of Foldscope was demonstrated by T Memsana preparation of slide and observation with Foldscope by students .The sheer joy could be noted on faces of those teenagers ,boys and girls.A lively chat with students, teachers enjoying green lemon tea, refreshment and acknowledgement of seeing for the first time through the microscope ended the working day.I with the team realised that how important is the venture and initiative by DBT where high school students have seen microscope only in the photo/picture in their biology book and admired the invention of Prof Manu Prakash for resource crunched rural areas in North East. _Prof Asha Gupta,P.I.
