During the summer of 2018, I ran a science boot-camp for 20 students of Aarti High School, Kadapa, India. Aarti High School is one of the programs run by “Aarti For Girls”, a non-profit organization in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh. Over two decades, this organization has been working selflessly and endlessly to end gender discrimination by fighting female feticide, providing security of a home and opportunity to abandoned girls, and empowering women economically, socially and politically.
Assembling and using the Foldscope was one of the workshops I conducted there . It was an instant hit. We used it to make observations of one of the projects we conducted – The effect of garlic as anti-bacterial agent. Foldscope came in handy to observe the bacteria growth in water mixed with different concentrations of garlic. We also used the Foldscope for observing mineral water and creek water. It is a very helpful tool especially given the economic constraints! Thank you Mr. Cybulski for donating the Foldscope!
