On 30 October 2018, we conducted a workshop entitled “Utility of the Foldscope in Crop Protection: Assessment-cum-Training Workshop for Farmers” at the Department of Horticulture, Channapatna, Ramanagara district of Karnataka. The main purpose of this workshop was to introduce the Foldscope to local farmers and to assess the utility of the gadget in crop protection. Over 62 farmers, who mainly cultivate vegetables, ragi, maize, papaya, mango, coconut and ornamentals, participated in the event. Dr P. Sreerama Kumar (Principal Investigator) and Ms H.N. Roja (Junior Research Fellow) presented all details about the Foldscope and its utility in agriculture and horticulture.  Later, the farmers received hands-on training on the use of the Foldscope. Also demonstrated the techniques of sample preparation, mounting of slides and visualisation of mounted samples under the Foldscope. The participants observed locally collected insect pests and diseased leaves through the Foldscope. Slide-mounted mites and insects were also shown. In the end, the farmers gave a positive feedback. Mr H.R. Vivek (Senior Assistant Director of Horticulture), Mr H.R. Ramachandrappa (Retired Assistant Horticulture Officer) and Dr B.S. Rajendra Prasad (Scientist, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru) attended the programme as guests of honour. Mr S.C. Chandrashekara (F.F.S.) was instrumental in gathering the farmers.
