During their period of school level education many students rarely get to see, much less handle microscopes. Microscopes are expensive and schools with low funding, mainly rural schools usually can’t afford them. Foldscopes can be used to address this problem by bringing the microscope into the classroom. They are a low cost and convenient way for teachers to give students a visual demonstration of the microscopic world of which they learn in their textbooks. Modes of display by projection or using mobile phones can be used for large audiences. Foldscopes can also be shown as an example of a frugal innovation in science and can inspire students to utilize their creativity and bring out their own innovations. ANVESHA, the science club of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Trivandrum (IISER-TVM) is organising an outreach program titled “IISER@School” aimed at bringing science into the classroom through simple demonstrations that can be used to explain various concepts learned by the students and also to introduce new concepts in simple exciting ways. As part of the program students and teachers are given an introduction to foldscopes and foldscopes and sample slides are given to each school.
