The above sample comes from a fragment of a narrow brown leaf. The leaf was collected from the grass outside of Lewis Library in Princeton University. The image was taken by connecting the foldscope to an iPhone camera lens. The foldscope provides a detailed look at the surface texture of the leaf. The yellow veins stand out in sharp contrast to the brown coloring. It was challenging to find an appropriate sample, one that was small enough to fit on the slide and flat enough to photograph well. It also took some time to figure out how best to position the flashlight below the foldscope. But the results were worth it; the intricacies of this tiny piece of leaf are suddenly revealed.
