 I found this rotting leaf from a Ginko tree outside of McDonnell Hall at Princeton. Its yellow color is visible in the microscope. It likely has begun its decomposition process, which is why there are some black dots visible in the lower left quadrant of the image; it is likely some sort of organism that is growing on the leaf and decomposing it. The thick, brown lines running parallel through the image are leaf veins. The varying colors of the leaf suggest different thicknesses that allow different amounts of light through, which is likely emblematic of its decomposition. It is surprising to me that different parts are in different stages of decomposition, and it was interesting to see this process in action through the presence of microorganisms.
