The foldscope experience was a whirlwind. It started with the process of creating the foldscope– which was a tad more difficult than expected. Some difficulties included realizing that there were three lenses attached to each other. Another was that color on the instruction sheet actually mattered. But ultimately, it was satisfying to create the small microscope. During our lab period in Professor Pringle’s Evolutionary Biology class, we used the scopes to view some samples. I sampled a pine tree leaf and some dirt. Viewing the samples, and getting a hang of using the foldscope took longer than expected. Natural light often isn’t enough for certain samples. So I would recommend using a phone camera light to mimic a microscope light. Also, when taking pictures, it’s helpful to use a phone camera light under the foldscope, while using another phone to take the picture. Here are the pictures below!
