The students were able to gather a variety of samples of plants from outside. We had them look at the samples and draw and label what they saw. They made observations about what they noticed and then generated questions about things they were wondering about.

As the students were looking, I circulated around asking questions like “Where might gases enter or leave? Or what structures might help capture sunlight?” We used the Foldscopes as well as pictures of slides so that they could see everything in case they were having trouble seeing it on their own.

Finally, the students completed a CER using the prompt: “How do the structures you observed in the leaves help the plants carry out photosynthesis and cellular respiration?”

Reflection:
I believe the activity went well. It was my first time using Foldscopes so I was a bit rusty in assisting all the students but we were able to get some cool slides. I love how they are able to see things and it is literally in their own backyard. It was also awesome for them because I believe the connection on the CER was easier made due to this.
