In lipah beach (Amed) in the north of Bali, Indonesia there's a wonderful coral garden and turtles. At night, you can also observe bioluminescents planctons called Ostracod.
I'd the chance to collect planctons there during the Fab-Island-Challenge with Manu Prakash and the team "Looking closer with Prakash Labs" to observe them with a planktoscope .
I came back to this little paradise to spend holidays.
I'd my foldscope but didn't bring the frugal placton net we've build during the challenge !
Anyway, I was decided to catch and observe these bioluminescents planctons, so I went to the black sand beach with the tweezer and the eppendorf tube from the Foldscope Premium Accessory Pack.
Each waves was leaving a lot of little blue light, looking like stars on the black volcanic sand !!!
And I start collecting these blue stars with the tweezer. Then, quickly go back to my hotel room, and start to collect one of these blue lights with tape to observe it with my fodscope.
I wasn't sure the process was good but I succeeded to tape one.
The pictures from my foldscope:
And also a photo of Lipah Beach :
You can also find more infos about the water in lipah beach on the aqualink.org project: monitoring the marine ecosystem, in particular coral reef and providing open source data for example in LipahBeach
