On May 10th, my Marine Ecology class went to Pt. Piños in Pacific Grove to explore the intertidal. (You may have already seen pictures for this field trip.) I brought along my foldscope and some supplies to hopefully view some things microscopically. I do not have a Smart phone, so thankfully one of my classmates helped me by taking pictures with her phone so that I could post them here.

 I think that green algae is awesome, so that is what I searched for on this field trip. In this first picture, you see
 <em>
  Cladophora columbiana
 </em>
 (Green pin-cushion algae) with forceps in the photo for scale. (You can also see Tar-spot algae and likely some Turkish towel algae, which are not green!)

 As you can see in the photo green pin-cushion algae is spongy and looks just like a pin cushion. It is a little green clump that is made up of branching filaments.   You can see the filaments in the microscopic photos below.

 Sea lettuce (

 .) can also be found in our area.  Unlike
 <em>
  Cladophora
 </em>
 ,
 <em>
  Ulva
 </em>
 is a thin, smooth and flat algae that is only 2 cells thick. It is easily ripped off by waves and it often washes up on the beach.  Below you can see a bed of lettuce (along with mussels and some reds and browns).  This bed of sea lettuce surprised me a little.  I am used to seeing larger blades of
 <em>
  Ulva
 </em>
 , but these were fairly compact.

 in a foldscope.  You can definitely see how flat it is compared to
 <em>
  Cladophora
 </em>
 and you can also see that it is relatively thin.

 Here are a couple of other things I looked at under the foldscope.  These two are photos of a red algae found in the intertidal.  I loved to see the little spines on these filaments.

I love green algae!  An upclose look at Cladophora and Ulva at Pt. Piños, Pacific Grove, CA.

 Last time I posted about algae and my final microscope image (the edge of Feather Boa kelp) gave me inspiration for my next search…actual feathers!

 On Friday the 13th…ooo, spooky….I was able to get to my favorite place on Earth, the beach!  I visited Del Monte Beach in Monterey, CA, and as usual, I saw my gull friends.  And what do gulls have?  Feathers!  I saw plenty of them scattered in the sand.  I did not have access to a Smartphone that day, but I decided to try to look at the feathers using my foldscope anyways.  I decided to pick up a variety to see if I noticed any differences in the feathers.  Here is a picture of the feathers I selected to view.

 I do not own a Smartphone and I was enjoying my me time at the beach, but I did have my daughter’s Canon Powershot Elph camera.  I decided to try to take photos with it.  Here is the result:

 It is a great little camera, but I haven’t quite figured out how to adjust it where it will focus on something that is close-up.  You can however, see the feathers magnified in some of the pictures.  The great thing about feathers is that they have barbules with little “hooklets” that will lock the barbs (or the side branches of a feather) together.  That is what I was attempting to take a picture of.  As you can see in the picture of all the feathers, I tried to unzip the feathers to better my chances of seeing the barbules and “hooklets”.  When birds preen, they are cleaning their feathers, removing dust and mites and realigning or zipping their feathers back together.

 The last time that I visited Pt. Piños, I noticed this area of algae covered rocks and the lush beds of sea grass.  I decided that I wanted to return soon to take a closer look.

 May 16th at 1pm was my chance!  The low tide of 0.91 that day was at 1:52pm.  I messaged my good friend Susan and asked if she would help me take some pictures using my foldscope.  She agreed, so I gathered my supplies and headed over there.  As you can see, it was a beautiful day!

 I wanted to do something different today.  There was a technique in another class that I was aware of and I wanted to try it on the green rocks at this site.  The techniques was to use a toothbrush and scrub the algae off of the rocks in a stream or river.  I figured that it would work in the intertidal as well.  Unfortunately, I could not find a toothbrush to use, but the teaching labs at CSUMB let me use the bottle brushes pictured below.

 I went straight for the rocks and started scrubbing a rock and then tried to create a wet mount.

 We abandoned that idea and found a feather!  You can see the barbs and barbules much better in this photo than you can see with a regular camera and the foldscope.  (See my previous post.)

 We also ended up looking at a blade of sea grass mounted on a slide.  The photos turned out better than I had anticipated.   Sea grass is a flowering plant, not an algae and can grow in salt water!

 We developed a good system.  I made the slides and she took the pictures.  Here is my attempt at a cross-section of a blade of Turkish towel algae (
