Yesterday we came to Stanford to start working on out on the implementation of the Foldscope as a Cervical Cancer diagnostic tool. Jeel exposed a conference about how to detect Cervical Cancer and we answered questions from the team. He also presented the Eco-Pap. The Eco-Pap allowed the diagnosis of cervical cancer with an environmental performance, reducing the costs, time and exposition to toxic-carcinogen reagents with a high degree of pollution, maintain a cost-benefit in favor of patients and it is beneficial to the global environmental health. At our first time in the lab, Saad encouraged us to build the Foldscope ourselves so, when we get back at our homes, we can teach another people to use them. We started watching a bee wing slide and we felt amazed by the Foldscope capability to see the small wing’s hairs. After that, we started to see the Cervical Cancer cells slides. We could see Cancer cells but we saw problems at the focus. We tried a new Foldscope prototype and we saw a better focus on the images. We wanted to make a comparison between microscope and Foldscope images to confirm it could be used as a diagnosis tool, so we took images of the samples with the Laboratory Microscope, a Nikon Eclipse TE2000-U, to later compare the same images taken from a Foldscope. After we got back to our Hotel, we talked about improvements we could make to the Foldscope.
 
 The second research day, we did a lot of brainstorming with Saad and we decided to make a new Foldscope prototype specially for diagnosis. It is supposed to work as a Google Cardboard device. We started to take with the Foldscope the same images we took in the microscope, so we can later compare them. We also went to a black room to test the projection of the images on the wall.

 We will take some Foldscopes with us to keep improving the device and test it as a cervical cancer diagnostic tool. We hope to see radical changes soon in the cancer diagnosis field. We are very excited to get back home and keep working with this amazing device.

Using the Foldscope as a Cervical Cancer diagnosis tool

After I came back from Stanford, the first thing I did was to show the Foldscope to my family and friends. After that, to Universities. Yesterday, I had the first opportunity to show this device to a large group of people. I was invited to a Neurogical Congress in the Province where I live, Mendoza. The organization let me have a desk to show the device to the people passing by.

 I showed some cervical cancer samples, and also, we tested a leaf that a kid had in his pocket.

 The results where amazing. I can’t describe the kids face when he saw who the green leaf he had in his pocket the whole day looked like under the foldscope. A lot of people where astonished because of the image quality of the device and, most of all, because of its price.


 Later that day, I had the chance to talk in the congress as an exposer for some minutes in front of 4000 people. I told them what the device I had in my hand was, how it works and the possibilities of it.

White and Black sugar crystals

 A couple of days ago I attended a Hackaton in Mendoza, Argentina. The main objective of it was to tell everyone what the Foldscope is and its possibilities. A lot of people were interested on the device. After talking a lot, we came up with the idea of an automatical image taking machine. So, we started working! We grabbed an Arduino and started sketching how the program would be like. The machine will use Stepper Motors to move the axis of the Foldscope and take the desired sample pictures. The Hackaton was too short to finish the Work, so we scheduled more meetings to keep working. I will keep you posted!

 Hi folks! Since I came back from Prakash Laboratory, I showed everyone I know the huge possibilities of the Foldscope. I talked with the media about it and one day I received an email of Esteban Bullrich, the Argentinian Education Minister. He invited me to talk about the Foldscope and we decided to implement it in the whole country as an education tool for High School students. We believe that a hole generation of minds can change because of having a microscope in their pockets. In Argentina, there are thousands of science passionate kids who doesn’t have economic resources to access a scientific tool. That can change now. This could be a really big change not only for the Argentinian education system, but for the course of the country itself.

Foldscope as an education tool in Argentina

Hi folks!  A couple of weeks ago, “Campus Party”,  one of the most important Technology, innovation and entrepreneurship event was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I had the opportunity to have an stand to show the Foldscope to everyone.

 During three days, hundreds of people passed by the stand to check if what their eyes were seeing was actually real. People were amazed to see the Foldscope in action and really excited about the idea of having this device as an education tool on Argentinian schools.
