   Human Hair 140X LED/condenser…successful.
  </p>

   I set up the Foldscope with the condenser lens and LED setup, and high mag lens, using a 3 stack of paper slides as supplied. All worked except I couldn’t get a clear focus (lens looked spotty – maybe my inability to focus in/out correctly/or just how a high mag lens looks? Seemed dirty.). Tried the low mag lens with LED/condenser setup and it worked well. Tried the camera on my less than smart phone, but the “shutter” speed was too slow to get a clear shot. Setting up on my school’s iPad worked, creating this photo. Shutter speed was everything as I worked with the Foldscope focus (which is not simple on the iPad – may have to upgrade my phone).

Low mag success, high mag lens dirty? Help!

 After struggling to record high mag lens work, I decided that I might be simply misunderstanding what I see through the high mag lens.  Color saturation, light, and pattern are hard to interpret when we are used to our eyes alone or a low mag lens.  Reminds me of the concept someone else shared, that, for tiny organisms, moving through water is like swimming through molasses (for us).  Are fewer photons present because of the smaller space?  I guess yes, but have an understanding of light and intensity on the level of a child seeing for the first time.  Maybe my lens is just dirty!  😉  I’ve included the low mag image along with 4 high mag images of the same paper slide with Foldscope tape front and back.  Will be letting students mess with high mag iPad photography next week.  They were highly successful at viewing through the LED/high mag setup, and are ready to go!

 The topography of the onion skin delights me and the colors are so beautiful, including a purple impossible to capture. Under lower light, the cell walls look taller than the cytoplasm, and look to be ragged, not as I expected.  The shapes of the cells are interesting, and some are curved, perhaps bulging from being crushed…not the offset brick pattern I expected.  I’m looking at my onions in a whole new way now!

 Fine-tuning my methods now that we’ve fried our LED board:
</p>
<p>
 I tried using a bright overcast sky as the light source, and blocking using my hand or turning away from the window to regulate light.  I also discovered a great stabilizer for keeping the lens “on the spot” when I find something interesting – my hands are not terribly steady, or able to fine adjust with tiny enough movements.   Little bits of masking tape (the white kind) have enough stretch to allow me to move around the area of the specimen, but remain fast enough to keep things in place for viewing and taking pictures, leaving my hands free to bend and lift the scope to focus, and to push the shutter button.  I used a wee piece of tape on every thing that might move when I don’t want it to, including the slide.  This really helped when switching from low to high mag…I just pulled out the one lens and replaced it with the other, and the spot I wanted was still in view!  I used a school iPad for photos, as I don’t need a smart phone 😉

Study in Light:  Low/High Magnification, Onion Skin and Natural Light.

 Real tools lead to real work at Opportunity Middle School in Concord, NC.  Using microscopes, foldscopes, and laser lens hacked cheap fire tablets, our students are opening up their world, all on their own.  With only a couple of takes after stumbling over the term “microscope,” these 7th and 8th graders free-styled this video to share with others.  Credits to Demauree, Daniel and Eddie.  Middle school student engineers engaged in tech review lesson, with analysis checklist for pros and cons for each tech device analyzed.  Summary video of the day’s work.

Video:  Middle School Tech Review

<p>
 Hello – nothing looks melted or anything, but then again I don’t know what exactly it looked like before it stopped working.  I replaced the battery, but still no light.  It worked fine for a week of work, and was lit the last time we used it in our middle school science classes.  Have been just fine shooting pics with the iPad and natural light w/high and low mag, no LED/condenser.   See my recent onion skin post for results.

 Thanks for offering to help find a fix!  No rush – the kids will be trying the natural light setup with both lenses this week.  Sorry for the poor close focus on the camera.

 When I saw this flying insect, we were doing Foldscope.  I was very excited to be doing it and grabbed a yellow (dandelion) flower I saw sitting on the table (from the prior class).  I played with it a little and saw a little teeny tiny bug and decided I was going to look at it in my Foldscope.  I made a little slide for it to be in (with a sheet protector, made into a small sleeve).  (It escaped and then) it started shaking and moving its back part of its body.  I thought it was laying eggs, but it was trying to fly away, and (something) fell off (onto the table) when it flew out into the middle of the room!       – Nate
