Anjana Singha Naorem

Heteroptera have piercing and sucking type of mouth parts. They used to suck plant sap by inserting it’s stylet on the host surface. When the insect start inserting it’s stylet on the host surface (eg- bean, tomato, eggplant), salivary secretion occurs and it starts depositing by producing a ring like structure. A salivary sheath also protrudes from that ring . This whole structure is called Feeding puncture. Different bugs produce different types of feeding punctures depending on the length of the stylet and amount of salivary deposition.


 A thin transverse section of bean was made and put it on a clean glass slide. Then the specimen was covered with transparent cellotape and observed under the foldscope and few photos were captured.

Feeding punctures of three different Bugs

On dated 03-09-2019, an outreach workshop on the use Foldscope was organised in Pragjyotish School, Panjabari, Guwahati (Assam). Me (PI) , CoPI Dr. Namrem Suchindrajit Singh, Project Asstt. Santana Saikia and two of my student Rubina and Anandita were present there.Students of class VII, IX and X were targeted and taught about assembly of Foldscope and how it can be used to observed their syllabus related topics like- onion peel, pollen of flower etc. They were very curious about the Foldscope as they have not seen a normal microscope before, so it was a new to them. Objects collected by the students like- their own hair, leaves section, Frooti were also observed by them. One Foldscope was given to their School so that later on they can use this to enlighten their curious mind.

Hi All!


 I am very excited to be a part of Foldscope community. Though a late entrant in posting comments and pics since the time I got my Foldscopes but I have been enjoying the pics and videos of the others in the community. I too have taken many pics using Foldscope but haven’t been able to upload it. Today, giving a first try. Hope it is successful!

 Excited Undergraduate Students to see Protozoans under Foldscope for the first time. It was a different feeling altogether for them to observe Protozoans in Foldscope rather than the usual compound microscope. Resolution too was much better.

 Cotton University in association with Regional Science Centre, Guwahati organized a one day workshop for secondary school teachers and students on 12 Oct 2018. Three Schools- Assam Jatiya Vidyalay, Maharishi Vidya Mandir (Silpukhri) and Maria’s Public School (Narengi)  participated with 30 students along with two teachers from each school. Workshop coordinator (Dr. Anjana S Naorem)  introduced the participants with the Foldscope and the story behind its creation which inspired the young participants especially the story of how Gandhiji’s picture with microscope inspired Dr Manu Prakash to create such amazing tool of the century. The concept of frugal science made them to believe that if there is a will there is a way. It was followed by training on the assembly of  Foldscope and sample preparation and slide preparation tips by Santana Saikia (project assistant). After that there was no looking back. All the students  were in a competition to get their own sample and view them under the microscope. Everybody wanted to have their own unique collection and see them under Foldscope which they have never thought of doing it in their life with so much ease. With Foldscope so handy to use, they started exploring all the possible things around them be it the most obvious hair to start with or their dandruff or bird feathers, leaves (both green and dried), grass, soil, cocoon, butterfly wings, etc. Many of them tried to draw their observations. The enthusiasm and excitement is reflected in the pics here. Wish we had  many Foldscopes to be distributed to the students….

A visit to Chandubi lake , a place of scenic beauty  along with Cotton University students for water sample collection for Dr. Shamim Rahman’s DBT-Foldscope project turned out to be a Jackpot for me too. I along with my project assistant Ms. Santana Saikia and few other students of M.Sc.-  Anindita, Rubina and Rohit started looking for bugs in the nearby vegetation. Suddenly they observed that just near the bank of the lake where the area was very marshy, lot of giant red bugs were seen, which we had never seen before. Along with that another new species of bug (
 
 Rebecca
 
 sp.) in our collection was added. Huge masses of the eggs were also collected. Here we are sharing the pics of the bug and the egg mass under the Foldscope. These bugs are yet to be identified. We have brought them in the lab and trying to rear them and will try to observe their stages….
