We are so much excited to share this, we have explained about foldscope and its usage as well as necessity in the field of Genetics and Plant Breeding to our eminent scientists Dr Phundan Singh and Dr Lohitashwa sir.  Thrips, order Thysanoptera, are tiny, slender insects with fringed wings. They feed by puncturing the epidermal (outer) layer of host tissue and sucking out the cell contents, which results in stippling, discolored flecking, or silvering of the leaf surface.

Thrips under foldscope

There are more than 6,000 thrips species sucking the life from plants all over the world. A common pest found in greenhouses and indoor/ outdoor gardens, thrips damage plants by sucking their juices and scraping at fruits, flowers, and leaves. Plant leaves may turn pale, splotchy, and silvery, then die. Injured plants are twisted, discolored and scarred. Thrips can be classified using Foldscope at sub-order level based on antenna shape and structure.

Thrips classification using Foldscope

The antennae of insect are often called ‘feelers’ because the insect waves them around. This is the wrong name because they are not only used for touch. The antennae are actually the insects ‘nose’ – they are used for the sense of smell.


 The paired antennae are made up of a number of individual joints. This means they can be very mobile. The basic form of antenna is filiform. In this type, there are many segments that are more or less equal in size. Filiform antennae are seen in a wide variety of groups, such as

 Antlions have long clear wings with many veins and long delicate bodies. Some of them have dark markings or spots of color in the wings. Antlions have short but conspicuous antennae that are enlarged at the end. Antlions are likely to be found at lights at night but can be found in the daytime usually at rest on foliage.




 Immature antlions are called doodlebugs. They make pits in sandy areas and wait for ants and other insects to fall into the pits. Since these are predatory on pests of crops so these are Beneficial insects.

 Today I observed rice seed under foldscope. I am thrilled to see trichomes on its surface, furthur started to see number of trichomes and density. Need to refer rice seed trichome related litrature for furthur studies.

 Small interaction with PG students was scheduled today afternoon session. It was more like free interaction and active,rather than class theory model. So all students were happy to hear about foldscope and curious to use it. It is always excitement to observe the curious minute living things under foldscope. This time we observed roundworms (C. elegans) through foldscope . We observed carefully their structure and movements.
