Cape Town Escapades with Foldscope!

<p>
 Last Tuesday, the University of Cape Town (UCT) opened its doors to some eager high school students from local township schools for a Youth Open Day outreach event. This event was organized by a lovely UCT medical student I met recently, Theodora, who is part of the Career Development UCT Surgical Society. I met Theo during my first visit to UCT’s Health Science campus for a mini Foldscope training session, and then had the pleasure of attending this program to help host a Foldscope workshop!

 When I arrived around noon, the students had just finished two clinical workshops on CPR and suturing. Then, we were all treated to a fantastic talk by UCT’s very own (and very cool!) Vice Chancellor Mamokgethi Phakeng, who shared her inspiring story to success against shaky odds.

 From talking about her drive to fight assumptions and doubters, VC Phakeng gave meaningful advice to students in the auditorium, promising that UCT will help students succeed if they really want it and show results.

 Afterwards, we moved to a classroom to start the Foldscope workshop. The students were from non-profit organisations AfrikaCan and IkamvaYouth, which aimed to introduce high school learners from marginalised communities to UCT that day.

 The students were astounded by the simplicity of Foldscope, to get their hands on an origami microscope and build it from the ground up.

Foldscopes at UCT Youth Open Day &#8211; 4/30/19

<p>
 This Saturday at the Cape Town Science Centre I held the first in a series of workshops for hands-on STEM workshops at the Cape Town Science Centre. Young students and their parents were invited to join in on the DIY origami fun, exposing kids to a low-cost tool to which they were able to see leaves, onions, flowers, and more under the microscope with!

Cape Town Science Centre (CTSC) Foldscope Workshops

 Every day as I walk out of my residence here in Cape Town, I pass by this brilliant hibiscus flowering tree. Oftentimes I’ll snatch a flower down just to add some natural color to my room, and I was so wowed by the different parts of it I saw under my Foldscope:

 A little less than two months ago, I was passing by the lush vineyards of Cape Town’s 2nd oldest city, Stellenbosch. While I wasn’t there for the famous wine-testing, I instead headed to Stellenbosch University to hold two back-to-back workshops with electron microscopy and Foldscoping expert, Dr. Lydia-Marie Joubert (@lydiaj)!

 Below are some photos from our workshop below at the Central Analytical Facilities (CAF) house, where we worked with learners from two high schools from the local township, Makapula and Kayamandi HS.

 After assembling their own Foldscopes, students were able to look at chloroplasts, flower petals, and some of the boys dug around a bush to catch a cricket for their experiment!

 Since the students were involved in a polluted water project with the Water Institute, we were especially excited to look at water droplets and soil collected from the Krom River.

 Finally, this last photo is one of my favorites from that day, I don’t know who took it but I remember the students being really excited to learn how Foldscope can connect with their phones. To the right is Geevarghese, a UCT student who became one of my best friends from Cape Town, and I’m so grateful he unknowingly said “Sure, why not?” to this journey with me that day to help volunteer with these students!
