Microworld of Hibiscus @ Exhibition

The leaf of an unknown plant was collected and observed through the foldscope. The cells were spherical in shape. The veins were also observed.

Cells of leaf

The students of l and ll P U of Siddaganga college had an opportunity to explore the permanent slides using foldscope. They prepared the temporary slides of cheek cell, onion peel and stomata and observed through the foldscope.

 Bougainvillea is a thorny ornamental plant.The leaves show reticulate venation which is the characteristic feature of dicot plants.The venation shows the network formed by veins and veinlets with repeated branching on the lamina of the leaf.

The antennae of cockroach helps to feel and smell the world around them.They are made of lots of tiny hairs.

Cockroach -antennae under foldscope

Banana leaf is a monocot leaf showing parallel venation .The veins are arranged parallel to each other and never join any other veins.There is no branching as in reticulate venation.


 Stomata are  distributed equally  on both upper and lower surface unlike dicots where more stomata are present on the lower surface.

Class-7                                                              Topic-Budding in yeast                                Lab activity was conducted for class 7 to show the process of budding in yeast.A pinch of yeast was placed in a container with some water and a spoon of sugar was dissolved in it.It was kept for an hour in warm room. A drop of liquid was placed in a slide and observed under foldscope .We could observe spherical shaped yeast cells. We could also observe new buds but it was not clear.

Reproduction in yeast by budding &#8211; Class 7

Chalk is made up of calcium   carbonate .We teachers use chalk to write on board every class and are exposed to it for longer time. So thought of exploring the microscopic view of chalk dust settled on class room floor during traditional teaching with dusting under the foldscope.


 Chalk dust is considered to be non toxic but if over exposed ,may cause respiratory problems due to its accumulation .Chalk dust is allergic to some people .


 Chalk dust appeared black under the folsscope even though it was white in colour.
