My lips easily get dry, so I always carry around a lip balm. In my biology class, I had my lip balm in my pocket, and I wanted to see how the lip balm would look like under a microscope. I did not expect much because this was my first trial, but I was fascinated to find that a microscope made out of origami can show such detailed parts of the lip balm. This successful outcome gave me motivation to look at various types of object (not only cells and leaves but literally anything) under the foldscope.

I looked at the prepared slides in the foldscope kit, various leaves and flowers, but I wanted to give a little change to what I view with a foldscope. I was at home very stressed in preparation for my chemistry exam. Of course, I needed chocolate to boost my energy, so I went downstairs to buy chocolate from the vending machine. Then, the thought to eat my chocolate and the soon-approaching deadline to submit our foldscope findings simultaneously crossed my mind. I ran back up to my room, got my foldscope kit out, and prepared a slide with a tiny bit of the chocolate to observe it under the foldscope. It was very interesting to see what I eat under the microscope within five minutes. I would love to carry around my foldscope to observe the different types of food served in Stanford dining halls.

 I wanted to see if I can look at a flower petal through the foldscope. I did not expect to see the petals so clearly with a foldscope, but I was fascinated. I found a rosemary flower in front of the Chemistry building at Stanford, brought it back to the building and immediately looked at the flower petal through the foldscope. I am still very amazed by the fact that I do not need to take the petal to a biology lab to look at its different parts. I would like to start a new project of looking at all the flower petals on campus through the foldscope.

 Our biology professor brought a Camellia flower as one of the samples we can look at under the foldscope. The picture above could not capture the entire beauty and what I was able to see with my naked eye, but it is incredible to be able to look at the parts of the flower petal in less than one minute. I look forward to looking at other plants around campus in the near future.
