 A wonderful friend of mine brought me some lavender. We were using them to dye tote-bags in an art project. I decided to put a small part under the Foldscope. I believe I am seeing the tiny individual violet cells or units.

 Leaf of a plant I found when walking around Wilbur dining around 9 pm on February 11th , 2019. I put the plant under the fold-scope immediately after picking it.
 <br/>
 When preparing the slide, I carefully cut a piece of the leaf.  It had white sticky fibers when I pulled it apart. I wanted to view these fibers and the leaf. The first image above is of those sticky fibers. I used a bead of water to help the plant leaf adhere to the slide. The water I used to stick the plant leaf to my slide seemed to have made a small barrier around the leaf. Perhaps this is because the leaf is hydrophilic and therefor attracted to the polar water. For the small sticky fiber, I see to be able to see individual sections and beads, perhaps they are cells.

 I was walking down Escondido Street tonight when I saw massive puddles of water flowing down the side walk. Looking up, there were two police cars and a fire truck. Their sirens were on and officers were marching up and down the street. I greeted one of the officers and asked what was happening. He told me that there was a leak and that it was being taken care of. With this fold-scope project in mind, I heroically picked up some mud with a origami boat that I made out of a scrap piece of paper and ran back to my dorm to get the fold-scope equipment out to make the slides. Some of the mud leaked through my little boat as I carried it back to the dorm; but I definitely had enough to make the slides I needed. I didn’t use any water to adhere the sample since the mud was already wet. For one of the slides, I placed some tape on each side like I did for the mud in class; for the other slide I did not. My preparation of the slides was standard. Results were honestly disappointing. I believe the mud that I collected was mostly water.

 These are the spines of a small cactus plant I pulled from a dormmates collection. Upon removing the spines from the cactus; I immediately began preparing the sample. I adhered the slide and glass cover together with a drop of water and used tweezers to place tiny cacti spines in the center of the droplet. These spines were almost transparent and thinner than a strand of hair. The slide was placed in the foldscope normally. It was easy to focus the Foldscope. In the image you can see mini thorns coming off from each spine. Although it was tiny; I did feel a sharp prick as I was pulling the cacti spines off the living cactus. I was surprised to see the tiny spines in the Foldscope. They are remarkably clear and beautiful.

 This is a collection of black and brown; what I believe to be fungal colonies; our professor brought to class. We attempted to thin out the spores by diluting them with water in a mini pipette. This worked well. I didn’t need to add any tape or water to create room between the slide and the coverslip. The two adhered together nicely, I did add a piece of tape on the outside to secure the two together parts together. In the photos there were many filaments; they were all tangled and overlapping. This was the best focus I could manage.

<p>
 This is a worm, one of the Bio 60 TAs, Steph, found between the
flowers and other organic samples the professor had brought to class. The worm
was so tiny, it was less than an inch long and barely 20 hair strands in width.
The slide was prepared using a drop of water and a layer of double-sided tape
between the slide and the coverslip. The worm was still alive; as you can see
in the video. It’s epithelial layer was so transparent; you could see the
different membranes. In the first video, you can see the mouth of the worm opening
and closing. In the second video I took of the worm’s body you can see the gizzard,
crop, intestines and the muscle layer of the worm as it contacts around something
it had recently digested. The two videos combined is a full body view of the
animal.
