paramecia swimming around in a sample of pond water collected from the pond next to Baxter Hall (collected at 6:00 pm 4/10/19 in a test tube)


 paramecia: domain eukaryote, size: .25 mm (guessed it was paramecia based on appearance)


 foldscope lens magnification: 140x


 Some possible questions: are there any other forms of life in the sample? (observe more slides) are paramecia thriving in this pond water?


 I could look into this by collecting more samples and seeing if the organism is actually a paramecia by comparing it to known samples.

Baxter Pond Paramecia!!

Image of Daylily flower pollen observed with Foldscope. Collected near Linde Hall around 2:30 pm on 5/3. Pollen retrieved by plucking off stigmas. Then, a glass cover was taped over the pollen onto the glass slide such that the tape did not cover the pollen through the cover piece and on the glass slide. The images above show a picture of the pollen through the foldscope. The pollen didn’t move and there were little football shaped particles scattered across the line of view. They seemed to be pretty clumped together, some possibly even forming patterns. I could look closer into this by collecting more samples, and seeing if patterns are haphazard or if there are similar ones.

 Lily of the Nile: Agapanthus orientalis
 
 


 Location Found: Sidewalk near Fleming House
 


 Date/Time: 5/30 at 5:33 PM
 


 Sample was obtained by removing the flower’s stamen from the petals and gently tapping the stamen onto the glass slide to collect pollen. After putting on a cover slide, the photo below was obtained. We can see in the image individual grains of pollen, which are pretty circular.

 Date/Time: 5/30 at 5:37 pm near Millikan pond


 Sample was obtained by using tweezers to remove the yellow fuzz from the petals. They were then placed on the glass slide. After putting on a cover slide, the photo below was obtained. We can see in the image the curly strands and fibers that make up the fuzzy lining.

 Date/Time: 5/30 at 9:12 pm in my room


 End of hair strand was obtained by directly plucking off head. Drop of water was placed on slide, hair strand was placed on, and cover slip was added. Photo was then taken.


 My hair is naturally black, but I’ve dyed my hair about 4 times now, so it’s kind of a blond/light brown color. The image obtained makes the strand look translucent which is pretty interesting. My hair strand also looks healthier than I would have expected.

 Specimen: Dust on Cotton Swab Fibers


 Date/Time/Location: 5/30 at 7:40 on my desk


 Cotton Swab was used to wipe desk surface. Then, it was wiped on the surface of the slide, and the slide was covered with a slip. A picture was then taken. In the image, we can see the dust particles trapped within the cotton fibers that tangle up into clumps.

 Sample was obtained by plucking leaf off tree. A cross section of the stem was cut and placed onto the slide and covered with a slip. A picture was then taken. You can see the little fibers of the stem in the picture.

 Sample was prepared by placing seedhead on slide, and covering it with a slip. The dandelion seedhead has very thin filaments at the top, which help it carry its seeds when the wind blows. These filaments can be seen in the image below.

Handy Dandy

Specimen name: unidentified perennial shrub


 Date/Time/Location: 5/31 at 3:10 pm in Avery House’s courtyard


 Sample was obtained my taking leaves from the shrub. The leaves were placed onto the slide, and a slip was placed on top. A bright light was needed to take the picture below, since the leaves were thicker than normal. You can see the individual stomata within the leaf in the image.
