I was originally interested in looking at a cigarette filter but was unable to slice it in a way that fit the Foldscope properly, so I instead settled on looking at tobacco leaves. I had some trouble figuring out the lighting as each piece was drastically different to the others in thickness, size and colour. In the end I was able to get some pictures, though they are not of great quality.
Above pictured are a two different pieces of crushed leaf. It was interesting to see how much each piece differed from the next. Though I cannot know for sure as I did not use and cut up a whole dried tobacco leaf myself, I think this could be due to the pieces coming from different parts of the plant/leaf. I really enjoyed seeing the patterning as seen in the photo of the larger sample. Though I was not able to make out much detail or see any individual cells I wonder if that would be different using a fresh leaf or if I had attempted to rehydrate this sample. Additionally, I wonder if the leaves appeared any different due to physical or chemical treatments in the process of being turned into a nicotine product.
