Moldy fruit is something we all deal with often unfortunately. I have always wondered if I am right to simply peel away, cut off or eat around the moldy parts without any negative consequences.

A few days ago I bought a pomegranate and to my terror today when I was cutting it today, I found small seeds and hair like fibers at the top of it, covered in something fuzzy and blue-grey. With the use of my FoldScope 2.0 I decided to examine the seeds to see if it is in fact mold and if yes, if I can decipher what kind.

It was difficult to find the sweet spot for the focus as the seeds were quite a bit larger than the fibers and a lotta bit larger than mold spores would be. I observed them at 140X magnification and with varying light conditions, which each highlighted a different part of the sample. While I cannot say whether it was, was not or what type of mold it is, it was interesting to see the mysterious grey fuzz up close appear rather green instead!
