I worked with hibiscus powder that I normally use to make tea, and I decided to explore it under my Foldscope microscope. After preparing a small sample, I observed it at around 140x magnification, which revealed details I had never noticed before.
Under the microscope, the hibiscus powder showed a mix of fine particles and irregular fragments, likely from dried petals. Some areas appeared more pigmented, giving a deeper reddish tone, while others looked lighter and more translucent. The texture looked grainy and uneven, reflecting how the dried flower breaks down into powder.
It was fascinating to connect something so familiar my everyday hibiscus tea to its microscopic structure. Observing it through the Foldscope made me appreciate how much complexity exists in even the simplest natural products.
