Day 3 of LGP at Ashoka University was all about exploring flowers and plants using the Foldscope. We started by collecting hibiscus pollen with tape and observing it under the microscope. The pollen grains appeared bright yellow, round, and covered with tiny spikes. It was fascinating to see details that are impossible to notice with the naked eye. Next, we examined sunflower pollen. It was harder to find on the slide, but once focused, the grains appeared smaller and more transparent than the hibiscus pollen. While working with the sunflower sample, we also observed tiny hairs from the plant. They looked like thin, transparent fibers under the Foldscope. One unexpected observation was a small blue microplastic particle near the sunflower hair sample. Although interesting, it was disappointing to see evidence of pollution even at such a microscopic level. Overall, the session was enjoyable and helped us learn new techniques for collecting and preparing samples while exploring the hidden world around us.
