Today, I had the chance to view fern rhizome under a foldscope. This tiny instrument offered me a completely new perspective on something I considered of negligible importance.
Under the 50x lens, I observed a nucleus of deep red colour. It was surrounded by various structures on a light blue background. Around it, were lightpink irregular structures. Further around it I observed a thick layer, almost as if it were a fence on the periphery. The thick layer was a magenta-red structure of polygonal shapes, mostly pentagons and hexagons.
Then, under 140x lens, I further examined these structures and realised the light pink polygonal structures were somewhat hollow. The polygonal structures seemed even more tightly packed.
Under 340x, the nucleus was prominently visible.
A major challenge I faced was fine adjustment, as it was my first time working with a foldscope. I was left in awe with how a small instrument could serve as a tool for a deep dive into the unseen, showing there’s way more to things than what meets the eye, and going beyond the surface, everything seems truly surreal.
