In this post, I am showing how I created a homemade substitute for safranin.
Take some pieces of chopped beets(4 or 5 pieces) and keep it in water. Take the water with beets and keep it on the stove to boil. Remember to keep it in a sim. After 15 minutes, the solution will have started to change to red. Make sure that the water does not evaporate. What I prefer when staining onion cells is that before putting the sample, stain a bit of the lens with the solution so that it can stain the onion peel. I usually apply 3 drops of stain on the lens, keep the onion epidermal layer(without a slide directly on the lens)and apply one drop of the stain after putting the epidermis on the lens. Make sure that the onion layer does not have any air bubbles and is spread out flat.
