Hi everyone! A couple of weeks ago my classmates and I received Foldscopes as part of our course at university. Assembling them was lots of fun and I felt like a child doing arts and crafts again. I genuinely didn’t believe they would actually work because surely you can’t make a microscope out of paper. But it worked!! And it was so cool!! We looked at a bunch of different specimens in class and I couldn’t wait to get home and show my sister. She was super intrigued by it and I gave her free reign to look at whatever she wanted to. First we looked at an insect leg that I got from uni. My sister and I had no idea what we were looking at, but seeing the different microstructures was incredibly fascinating.
I then let her do all the focusing and mounting of samples of her choosing. She had some flaking skin on her knee and we took a look at that. She was not expecting to see all of the cells and debris.
It just so happened that a mosquito flew past and I swatted it. We immediately put it on a slide, expecting to see all the tiny structures. Unfortunately, the mosquito was completely disfigured. But it was still interesting to look at.
All in all, it was a really fun experience and my sister has since developed an appreciation for science and the microscopic world. I’ll definitely be using my Foldscope all the time!
