Foldscope Findings! By Joseph Alejandre and Charlie Ortega Hi everyone, hope you’ve had a blast looking at things under a microscope! We have too, and we’re excited to share our findings with you! We are 8th graders attending Loyola Academy, which is dedicated to the teachings of biological science. This led us to this amazing project, and we’re glad we got the chance to test out this revolutionary microscope. First, we started out with building the Foldscopes. https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/hi-my-fisrt-video.mp4 The process to build was a little hard, but once it was built, we got right into being able to look at objects in the microcosmos. One of the first things we looked at was ash (Picture Below).
The ash seemed rock-like and, well ashy! For a microscope in beta, the image was certainly clear and able to be identified. The next thing we looked at was colored yarn, which was blue, red and yellow. As extra information, the yarn was very small and stringy, but the results were amazing! As you can see, the string is easily visible and clear and quite colorful!
For our final test, we looked at salt! It looked amazing, and this microscope really seems like it can handle anything!
We must remember this microscope is in beta, but for a start, this microscope works really well! There are a still a few kinks to work out- maybe a wider lens, brighter scope and easier instructions. But, all in all, distributing this microscope to 3rd world countries wouldn’t be farfetched and it would be world-changing. Again, we would like to thank Manu Prakash for this amazing opportunity, and we hope you had a great time using the Foldscope Microscope! And to finish off, here is a haiku for you!
