Near Lake Lagunita at Stanford University, there was a small, brown field mouse near the edge of the path. Upon moving closer, the mouse seemed to not have any visible fear of me. It carried on as normal, eating the ends of the grasses nearby, but there were black flies settling onto its back and into its fur, and I noticed its eyes didn’t look normal, almost like either they were swollen shut or just not there. A woman passed by with a dog, and said that she saw the mouse earlier, and that the dog was able to get fairly close to it without it being frightened off. With all this in mind, I deduced the mouse was sick, and decided to look at what it was eating. This was the best picture I was able to get, which is interesting because the tendril on the left-hand side is unexplainable to me.
