Secondary School Workshops “Discovering the “mysterious butterflies of the soul”.
Within the framework of the Uruguayan Week of Science and Technology
I visited Liceo Nº2, San José City (Canelones)
Liceo Nº 6, Rivera (Rivera)
and Bilingual Primary and Secondary School “Ciudad Vieja” (Montevideo)
In both instances, after an introductioin to Neuroscience and classical techniques to study the morpholoby of brain cells, students observed preparations made by Clemente Estable (1894-1976), a renowed Uruguayan Primary S chool Teacher and Neuoroscienctist disciple of Santiago Ramón y Cajal and founder of the Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas Clemente Estable.
The cerebellum caught the attention of Clemente Estable, as did his teacher Santiago Ramón y Cajal, not only for the beauty of its architectural organization, but also for being a structure of the central nervous ystem very suitable for studying the neuronal morphology and the structural details of the regions of the neurons that contact each other at the level of the synapses.
Observations of cerebellar histological preparations impregnated with silver allowed Estable to discover in 1923 a type of synaptic contact not yet described between the basket cell axon and the initial segment of the axon of the cells of the Purkinje cells, defying the law of the dynamic polarization of Ramón y Cajal.
Students also observed Golgi stained sections of Gymnotus omarorum brain and could see the morphology of principal neurons of the electrosensory lateral line lobe.
