Human head lice ( Pediculus humanus capitis) are obligatory parasites which spend their entire lives on the human scalp, feeding on human blood. As head lice are wingless, they cannot fly, and their short, stumpy legs render them incapable of jumping too. When they have found an appropriate site to feed, they puncture the skin with their mouthparts, inject their saliva which prevents blood clotting, and proceed to pump tiny amounts of the host’s blood through its mouth into its intestine. In this video, taken by Teacher Kim (Langub High School, Davao) on a Foldscope, one can see the blood flowing along the gut of this head louse. Head lice infections are known as pediculosis and treatment includes combing the hair frequently using a fine tooth comb and also topical anti-parasitic medications. Learn more about head lice here .
