Broccoli is an edible green plant in the cabbage family whose large flowering head is eaten as a vegetable.
Broccoli is classified in the species Brassica oleracea . Broccoli has large flower heads, usually green in color, arranged in a tree-like structure branching out from a thick, edible stalk. The mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves. Broccoli resembles cauliflower, which is a different cultivar group of the same species.
We observed infection on Broccoli in the stem and the floret region. The infected regions were used for isolation of the pathogen and we could identify the pathogen to be Alternaria spp.
This is the first instance where we could identify the pathogen directly from a farm bought vegetable using a foldscope 🙂 A small step towards use of Foldscope as a tool to identify plant diseases (a farmer friendly equipment) !!
