As a part of outreach program of Foldscope Project (Govt.H.S & M.P. School, Kokrajhar,Assam), we have organized some awareness programs for the local community in fringe areas of Kokrajhar district. In this endeavor, the areas selected were based on the poor students learning in nearby schools as well as the lack of basic amenities of health and hygiene in villages. Today we have visited one such village named SINGIMARI, which is about 10 KM from district headquarter – Kokrajhar. The village is inhabited by about 70 families of Adivashi (Tea tribes) community. Mostly the people are agrarian or wage labourer in their occupation. We found that the village have only 4-5 borewell for drinking water. So, sometimes they depend on the river water for their drinking. That makes us to raise the issues of water contamination and water borne diseases. The area has experienced various water related problems in past. When my colleague was giving demonstration on some aspects of their health and hygiene, I have prepared few slides from the water samples collected from the village. After the general awareness lectures, I showed them the slides under foldscope. The peoples gathered were totally amazed after seeing the germs creeping in the slides.
