I got my foldscope, and I started playing around with it. It is a really neat concept, and it amazes me how well it works. The assembly process is very easy thanks to the detailed instruction booklet. It took me around 20 minutes, and I didn’t find any specially challenging step. Actually, I really enjoyed assembling it myself, and I couldn’t stop thinking how much I would have loved to have a foldscope as a kid. The low magnification lens works well. Regarding the high magnification lens, I find it tricky to keep it in focus. I use my cell phone to take the images, and the most problematic point for me is being able to keep the phone stably horizontal and the sample in focus. Right now, I am using a stack of post-its to lay the phone on, maybe other users can share how they do it. Once I had the foldscope ready, I decided that my first sample would be a drop of my blood. I took a drop, I put it between two cover slips, and I used parafilm as a spacer between the cover slips. I finally sealed the sample with resin. The sample looks like this:
Sample ready to image This is how it looks under the foldscope:
Sample of my blood under the foldscope Sadly, the image is not very good, and I cannot distinguish any structure. I’ll keep working on getting a good image of a blood sample. Thank you very much for letting me be a part in the foldscope community.
