Hello Microcosmos,
My name is Brian. Over the summer, I had a Chemical Engineering Internship at Stanford University. I met one of Manu’s new postdocs who was finishing up at the lab I was working in, Saad, and I learned about Foldscopes. I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about them, with the intention of holding a Foldscope/Raspberry Pi camp for some refugee youth at YALLA in San Diego. I had coached and tutored these youth for a couple years and was already holding a Raspberry Pi (RPi) camp for them later that summer. I talked with Manu and got a Foldscope to work with for a few weeks.
I was able to integrate the Foldscope with the RPi Camera. I also created a few python scripts that allow the user to take pictures, videos, and timelapses. It automatically saves them with an inputted file name; you can save multiple images with the same filename and it will number them filename_2, filename_3 and so on. You can also elect to have a title for the picture/video/timelapse at the top of the image/video/timelapse.
The scripts use an open source library called OpenCV. This is a well-known computer vision library that is capable of nearly anything you could want to do with image/video processing including object detection, object tracking, background subtraction. Installing OpenCV onto the RPi is a rather time-consuming process involving numerous steps. I will try to have a tutorial up for you guys on how to do so soon. Also, once I find the scripts again I will upload them here too. I am currently very busy with school and college applications so I am sorry if there are any delays with the tutorial on installing OpenCV. In case anyone was wondering, I did get a couple class sets of Foldscopes to run that camp I was talking about. Hopefully, it will be held in the not to distant future. I would like to have about ten RPi cameras, but sadly the organization I work with is strapped for cash at the moment. I cannot wait to post more on the RPi Foldscopes and continue working on them!
-Brian
