Series of three workshops were conducted on Assembly and Use of Foldscope by BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru in association with Twinning partner, Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.
The Second Workshop was conducted on October 23rd 2018 in the afternoon session at Government Higher Secondary School, Ganga, Itanagar for class IX and X students. Around 40 students participated. The resource person were Prof N.Prathibha from Department of Biotechnology, BMS College of Engineering and Prof Pebam M. Singh from Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar. Prof Pebam Singh gave presentation about the Foldscope and its advantages over conventional microscope. He also mentioned about the collaboration of DBT, Govt. of India with Prakash labs with an objective to bring Foldscope to almost all schools in India in the coming years. Prof Prathibha demonstrated the assembly of Foldscope. The students were very excited in observing some permanent slides of samples under the Foldscope. They prepared their own sample slides with enthusiasm for observation.
Prof Pebam Singh and Prof Prathibha taught the students the basic protocol for sample preparation on microscope slides. Students prepared slides of samples which included pond water, hair strands, stomata and pollen. The students viewed the samples under different light source to get to know the significance of illumination for observation.

School found the Foldscope a very handy device for exploring nature and to work on their curiosity. Most of the students were of the opinion that it would be good initiative if schools were given Foldscope as many schools don’t have access to microscope which is expensive.
