A total of three workshops were conducted on Assembly and Use of Foldscope by BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru in association with Twinning partner, Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.
The third Workshop was conducted on October 24th 2018 in the morning session at Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar for First year BSc students. Around 60 students participated in the workshop. The resource person were Prof N.Prathibha from Department of Biotechnology, BMS College of Engineering and Prof Pebam M. Singh from Dera Natung Government College, Itanagar. Prof Pebam Singh gave an insight about the workshop. Prof Prathibha took the opportunity to thank Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India to sanction the project and sponsor for the project and the workshops conducted. She talked about the discovery of Foldscope and its various advantages over conventional microscope. The Principal of Dera Natung Government College appreciated the initiatives taken by the DBT, Govt. of India for allowing the students to explore nature at ease. He gave his support and encouraged the students to learn the techniques from the workshop.

Fig 1: Prof Prathibha thanking DBT, Govt of India for sponsoring the project and workshop and giving introduction to Foldscope Prof Prathibha demonstrated the assembly of Foldscope. The students observed some permanent slides of samples under the Foldscope. This added to their curiosity and they volunteered to prepare their own sample slides for observation. There were students from different streams of science which included botany , zoology, chemistry and physics.
Fig 2: Prof Prathibha demostrating assembly of Foldscope to students Prof Pebam Singh and Prof Prathibha taught the students the basic techniques of sample preparation on microscope slides. Students prepared slides of samples which included particulates, stomata, water samples, chemical salts and pollen. They viewed the samples under different sources of illumination and learnt to capture images using smart phones. Faculties of DNGC and Technical project assistants also gave their support and helped the students in sample preparation and mounting of slides.

Fig 4: Group photo with students of DNGC, Itanagar Students found it very useful and wished that they had access to this Foldscope at the school level so that they joined college with good knowledge and preparations to understand the concepts they learn in college. They gave their support for the initiative of the DBT, Govt. of India to encourage schools to use Foldscope in science labs.
