 大変しばらくぶりの投稿となってしまいました。今年はより積極的に投稿していきたいと思います。

 さて、今日は福岡大学 工学部の浜田先生と応援に駆けつけてくださった皆さんと共に福岡市立那珂小学校の生徒さんを迎えてワークショップを行いました。

 テーマは那珂小学校の生態系。オフシーズンで使われていない屋外プールや学校の敷地内にあるビオトープにどのような小さな生き物たちがいるか、顕微鏡を使って観察してみよう！

 一コマ90分でFoldscopeの組み立てから、サンプル採取、プレパラート作成、そして観察のすべての工程を無事行いました。最後はやや駆け足気味でしたが、参加してくれた小学5年生の皆さんはしっかり自分の顕微鏡を組み立てていました。ミジンコや葉脈、タニシなどに焦点が合うたびに、開催場所の図工室のそこここで歓声があがりました。

 「見てみて！」「えーこれなぁに？」「うヮー気持ち悪い…」「おっ、動いてる！」「わわ、すごーいよく見える！」と皆さん興味津々。先生も子供達と混ざってじっくり観察タイム。

 ３月２３日に福岡県福岡市を流れる樋井川（ひいかわ）の水辺環境を大切にしている地元の皆さんにお招き頂き、「樋井川さんぽ」に参加しました！
 
 On March 23rd, 2019, I was invited by an amazing community group in Fukuoka, Japan to join them for the monthly Creek Walk along Hii River.

 The Creek Walk at Hii River is a monthly creek appreciation event that’s been planned, coordinated, and executed by the local community group since January 2018.  今回は環境学習の一環として、Foldscopeで水辺の微生物も観察してみようという企画。
 
 This time, we offered observations of tiny critters in the river with Foldscope as part of the environmental education portion of the event.


 梅光園橋付近の川の中州に「小宇宙観察ステーション」を設置して、藻やミミズ、ミジンコを観察しました。
 
 We set up a “Microcosmos Observation Station” in the middle of the river near the Baiko-en Bridge, and observed algae, worms, and planktons.

 参加してくれた子供達は紙のプレパラートの作り方をすぐに習得して、一緒にミクロの世界を探検してくれました。その探検の成果をここでご紹介します。

Hi Microcosmos!


 There are many things I’ve wanted to image with Foldscope. One of which is Demodex, which is a face mite species that live on the faces of every one of us humans.


 Tonight, I’ve finally found one on my forehead! Yay!

 Ok, ok, mites on our faces. Some might say… EW! But hear me out 🙂


 They are part of our personal ecosystem; our human microbiome. And it’s nice to know that we have microscopic pets on our faces everywhere we go. Aren’t they kind of cute? No?

 Cute or not cute (I think they are cute), you can catch your own mite and see for yourself! And it’s super easy!

 All you need to do is stick a piece of clear tape across your forehead for a few hours. The longer you leave the piece of tape the more chance of you catching the Demodex. I left my piece of tape on for 6 hours.


 Then you carefully remove the strip of tape, and stick it on top of a blank glass slide.

 Then insert the slide into your Foldscope and scan for your mites!


 It took me 40-50 min to scan the entire strip of tape to find one mite which you are seeing below. So it may take some patience.

Hello Foldscopers!


 Do you take the bus or train to school/work/play? If you do, then what do you do to entertain yourself during your commute, especially when you’re traveling solo?


 I take the public transportation to get around. Which means I have these pockets of time when I just stand and wait for my bus, train, metro…I notice that most people usually are on their phones, and I do that, too. (I also daydream and/or read a book.)


 Then it occurred to me, “Hey, I could be Foldscoping!” So I took out my new Foldscope, attached it to my phone, and selected the “microscope slide of the day.”


 On this particular day while I was waiting for my train, I wanted to learn more about Honeybees (Go pollinators!), so I placed a prepared slide of Honeybee front leg and started exploring.

 As I was recording this, however, my thoughts drifted from honeybees. I noticed myself thinking more about the light source.


 My light source was outdoor ambient light, and this was recorded just before sunset. Photographers call a period of time just after sunrise or before sunset the “golden hour” because pictures taken during these hours come out especially beautiful. It seems like this is true for Foldscoping. As you can see in the video, I had a very balanced lighting that gave the image good contrast and resolution.


 Experimenting with light source has been on my mind ever since my friend Dina did a fantastic experimentation that resulted in a beautiful slide show (https://microcosmos.foldscope.com/?p=27747) I will do a separate post on how to create a slide show.


 Learning how to optimize the light for Foldscoping may become a theme during my commute.

Commuting through the Microcosmos Ep.1

Hi there Foldscopers,


 Hello from Japan!


 Manu asked me to explore planktons while I’m in Japan visiting family, and I even made my own plankton net a few weekends ago (more on this another day).


 But I’m finding that the ocean is not as accessible as I had imagined. Why? It’s because the coastline is quite a bit industrialized where I currently am on the Kyushu island. I haven’t found any publicly open spaces where I feel safe enough to go (with my plankton net) and catch some planktons for Foldscope fun. I will keep looking…. If you happen to know any good place to get close to the ocean on Kyushu Island, please leave a comment below.


 Luckily, my mom, as she often does, had a solution for me. “Come look in the kitchen.”


 Japan, as many of you might know, is an island country, which means that seafood is a major part of Japanese cuisine. So our kitchen always has treasures from the sea in stock.

 I will share my observations of “hanaebi 花エビ” which can directly be translated as “flower shrimp”. It’s commonly eaten seafood in Japan. You might see these in tempura (fried food), okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), or sprinkled on steamed rice. Yum!

 But they are not shrimp, technically speaking. I’ll have to ask the Foldscope community to chime in as I’m not a crustacean expert, but my quick Internet search suggests that they are “mysids” which are shrimp-like marine crustaceans https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Exploring the sea&#8230;at the dining table

Hello Foldscopers!


 It is cold outside where I am, but if it is a nice sunny day, I like to go for a walk and explore the creeks in my neighborhood.


 I love creeks. There is something about following the movement of water that calms me down. But if you live in an urban area like me, it might be tricky to find them. Often times, to make more room for buildings and roads, creeks are covered up underneath the concrete.


 Luckily, some creeks survive the urbanization and remain visible, although their shapes may be heavily modified by humans. Here is an example of such a water way.

 I prepared a wet mount slide with reusable PVC Slide with 2 windows (Slide C2) , placed the critter along with a droplet of creek water inside one window, then placed a reusable PVC coverslip over it very carefully.

 In Japanese, it’s called Kasago かさご, but I learned that in the local dialect it’s also called Arakabu あらかぶ. So many names!

 Lupe shared an easy way to take the ring stickers off of the sheet: bend the base sheet until the edge of the white ring “pop,” then peel the sticker with the tip of your nail.

 cut the edges off of the magnetic coupler and attach it with two layers of ring stickers around the camera phone. Depending on your phone case, your phone might still fit just fine!

 I went for a very long walk with a mission, follow a river from the upper watershed all the way down to the mouth.

 First, I separated the petals carefully…

Getting to know my (plant) neighbors Episode 1 &#8211; Camellia japonica 椿

 Copepod sighting from Kitakyushu, Japan! I would like to share a video of  my friend Blair and I seeing a copepod for the first time on March 25th, 2018 with a Foldscope.

 I scooped some pond water with a paper cup (reused from picnic lunch) from a lily pond where a few koi fish were swimming around. I chose a spot where water was very still. The cup scooped up the pond water with lots of algae, detritus, and tiny swimmers.


 With a dropper and a petri dish, Blair caught a tiny dot that seemed interesting to observe. So she transferred the dot onto a glass slide with a very very little droplet of water. And I covered the droplet with a piece of tape, using it as a coverslip.

 Well, I do. Maybe not when they are in their raw form, but I certainly do when they arrive at my dining table.


 I eat all kinds of edible multicellular marine algae (seaweed) on a daily basis. Edible seaweeds play an important role in my diet as sources of magnesium, calcium, iron, and iodine. And there are many dishes in Japanese cuisine that feature seaweeds. It’s no wonder since Japan is an island country surrounded by the ocean!

 For example, my favorites are the black, thin hijiki seaweed simmered in a stock and the stringy, sticky mekabu seaweed salad, shown above.


 Even though I grew up eating these seaweeds, I realized I am not so familiar with them from a scientific/ecological perspective.

 So I decided to take a look at them a bit closer to get to know them more because I got curious and it is important to know about your food.

Exploring the sea at the dining table Episode 3

Hi everyone!


 I have been thinking about a project I could do with Foldscope to learn more about rivers, specifically their ecosystem. So I joined a local river ecosystem guide and played in the mudflat to get to know more about my aquatic/benthic neighbors.

 The mudflat was made of very soft silt with about 15 ~ 30 cm layer of water, and when you walk into it your feet could easily get caught deep in the silt. I was at some point knee deep in the mud, and it was very difficult to walk.


 There I saw several kinds of fish (one shown below), crabs (forgot to take pictures), and lots and lots of invertebrates.  I am always amazed how a small patch of mudflat can provide home to so many kinds of species.

 I used my homemade plankton net (made with a glass jar with holes in the lid, nylon stockings, wire, and a rope) to catch some microorganisms.

 Q. How do I clean the lens?

<ul>
 <li>
 Cleaning the lens – use water if the dirt is stuck, remove dirt with the cotton swab, using gentle circular motion
 </li>
</ul>

 Q. How do I get a clear, focused image?

<ul>
 <li>
 For best images, consider investing in a box of glass slides and glass cover slips. You can tape the sides of the cover slips on the the glass slide to secure it in place.
 </li>
 <li>
 Focusing (anytime) keep your sample within the middle of the “field of view” (the circle of light coming through the lens) for best focus
 </li>
 <li>
 Focusing (direct view with your eye) : hold down on one side of the lens stage at the half moon shape with your one hand, use your dominant hand to slide the focus ramp to adjust focusing
 </li>
 <li>
 Focusing (attached on your phone) : try not to hold down on parts of Foldscope other than focus ramp, when you adjust focus, your sample might move, gently move the lens stage to keep the sample in the middle of the “field of view” and continue adjusting with your focus ramp
 </li>
 <li>
 Use good light source so that the light fills the entire “field of view” : looking up towards a skylight or a window, using LED light included in the kit, ambient light (
 
 NOT
 
 direct sunlight) if outdoors
 </li>

 The first thing I noticed this morning was green algae floating at the edge of the water.

Some would spin in place, while others would move around.Here is a

 In the 60min I spent observing, I noticed that the movement of these “dots” became slower with time. I also saw a slightly larger and brown round swimmer in this sample, and it appeared to be feeding on the smaller dots, but I could not be certain since it kept moving quickly. (Will have to watch the videos closely later)After my observation, I returned the algae piece back to the ocean and made sure I didn’t leave anything behind except for my footprints:)It’s always a good idea to bring a bag to keep all your trash during your Folscope session. Make sure you rinse your tools with water and dry them well so that they stay clean and ready for your next Foldscoping adventures!I can feel my skin sizzling a bit now, so that’s it for now! ~Honomi
