Hi everyone!
On March 23rd, 2019, I was invited by an amazing community group in Fukuoka, Japan to join them for the monthly Creek Walk along Hii River.
The Creek Walk at Hii River is a monthly creek appreciation event that’s been planned, coordinated, and executed by the local community group since January 2018. Activities include creek clean up and an educational piece on the local ecosystem in the watershed. More info about the group’s work can be found on the Creek Walk’s Facebook Page and Sakura Miyamoto’s blog , who is one of the coordinators of this event.
This time, we offered observations of tiny critters in the river with Foldscope as part of the environmental education portion of the event.
We set up a “Microcosmos Observation Station” in the middle of the river near the Baiko-en Bridge, and observed algae, worms, and planktons.

The kids who participated quickly learned how to prepare paper slides, and we explored the microcosmos together. Here, I report the results of our explorations.
