 A sample of the outer skin of an almond and a peanut was observed under a foldscope . The outer layer is know as the testa. Almond testa is mainly composed of sclerenchyma, with few traces of parenchyma and xylem tissue. Almond falls under a special category called Drupe. Peanut testa is also sclerenchymous and has a high content of cutin (waxy, water impermeable layer). As observed under the foldscope, the almond skin was more densely packed with cells than that of the peanut. The peanut skin showed lesser a lesser number of cells and more fibre, as compared to the almond testa. It was interested to see such variations in the skin structure of 2 different seeds and was very insightful.

 The morphology of a Cockroach was observed under a foldscope. The cockroach comes under the genus Periplaneta and phylum Arthropoda.




 The body of a cockroach is divided into head, thorax and abdomen. The antennae of the cockroach when viewed with the naked eye, appear as thin projections from the head region of the cockroach. However, when viewed under a foldscope, they appear to be segmented and also possess a large number of hair-like projections. These serve the functions of sense organs as they possess sensory receptors. The prothoracic legs of a cockroach were also observed under the foldscope. They also seemed to be covered with similar hair-like structures. The entire body of a cockroach is covered by a brown, hard, chitinous exoskeleton.

 A sample of pond water was observed under the foldscope. Organisms such as Algae were seen. It was observed that numerous Paramoecia were moving near the algal colonies. Near a few algal colonies, a organism which was slightly bigger than Paramoecium but smaller than Algae was seen. It was characterized by an oval body with a tail like end and resembled Daphnia. It was observed to be eating the algae. When viewed under a compound microscope, the features characteristic of Daphnia were seen. If anyone identifies it, please do let us know in the comments.


 Algae comes under the Kingdom Plantae and can be found in freshwater and marine water samples. Paramoecium is a eukaryotic protozoan of Kingdom Prokaryota. Daphnia, also known as Branchiopod belongs to Phylum Arthropoda of Kingdom Animalia. It was very interesting to see such diversity between different species of different kingdoms living together in an ecosystem.

 Description: Turmeric powder, as viewed from a foldscope microscope, appears as golden-yellow crystals. When viewed by the naked eye, it appears to be in a powdered form.  It was interesting to see that such a substance that appears as powder is made up of even finer crystals.

 Two different sources of turmeric powder were observed under a foldscope microscope and the results were interesting. Both of them were observed to have slightly different structures. While Turmeric powder ‘A’ had a more crystalline structure, Turmeric powder ‘B’ had a slightly less crystalline structure. This tells us that different sources have different structures although they may appear to be the same. ·
