Rotifers
 
 are microscopic aquatic animals of the phylum Rotifera.
 
 Rotifers
 
 can be found in many freshwater environments and in moist soil, where they inhabit the thin films of water that are formed around soil particles. On observing pond water under the Foldscope we spotted these rotifers.

Aphids under Foldscope from the IISER Bhopal campus- Part 2

We collected water sample from a pond in Bhauri, village adjacent to IISER Bhopal. On observation under the Foldscope, we came across some minute organisms in the water sample. We are conflicted so as to what it might be. If anybody can identify the organism, please do comment below.

Identification needed

We took water sample from a pond in Bhauri, a village near IISER Bhopal. On observation under the Foldscope, we stumbled upon some nematodes. Nematodes or round worms inhabit broad range of environments. Many of them are parasites of insects, plants or animals. Free-living species are abundant, including nematodes that feed on bacteria, fungi, and other nematodes. Adult nematodes are comprised of approximately 1,000 somatic cells, and potentially hundreds of cells associated with the reproductive system . Nematodes have been characterized as a
 
 tube within a tube
 
 ; referring to the alimentary canal which extends from the mouth on the anterior end, to the anus located near the tail. Nematodes possess digestive, nervous, excretory, and reproductive systems, but lack a discrete circulatory or respiratory system. In size they range from 0.3 mm to over 8 meters.

Nematodes under Foldscope

Tardigrades (water bears or moss piglets) are water dwelling, eight legged micro animals. They have been found everywhere and are among the most resilient animals. We set out in hunt for this extremophile around the vicinity of IISER Bhopal. We found a pond in Bhauri, a village near IISER Bhopal and collected water samples from the pond. Further exploring the village more, we came across a huge tree with some lichen on it and collected that sample as well. Due to the dry climate around Bhopal, we couldn’t find much lichen and moss, but we still collected as much samples as possible whenever we got a chance.

 Yellow trumpetbush is an attractive plant that is cultivated as an ornamental . It is drought tolerant and grows well in warm climates. The flowers attract bees, butterflies and humming birds.
 
 
 


 
 
 
 We have many beautiful flowers in our IISER Bhopal campus. We were very fascinated to observe pollen grains under foldscope.
 
 
 The pollen is a powdery substance containing the pollen grains and are present on the anther of a flower.
 
 
 


 
 
 
 So here we go, we plucked few flowers from our campus .
 
 
 To transfer pollen to my sample, I tapped the anther lightly against a glass slide. Yellow pollen dusted the glass. Placing a coverslip on top of the pollen dust and applying pressure with my finger, I shifted the glass to spread the pollen in a thin layer and glued the coverslip in place.
 
 
 And I got to observe the pollen grains.

Member species are renowned for their large, showy flowers and are commonly known simply as hibiscus, or less widely known as rose mallow. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, as well as woody shrubs and small trees.The leaves are alternate, ovate to lanceolate, often with a toothed or lobed margin. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, color from white to pink, red, orange, peach, yellow or purple, and from 4–18 cm broad. Flower color in certain species, such as H. mutabilis and H. tiliaceus, changes with age.  The pollen is a powdery substance containing the pollen grains and are present on the anther of a flower.

 So here we go, we plucked few flowers from our campus .
 
 
 To transfer pollen to my sample, I tapped the anther lightly against a glass slide. Yellow pollen dusted the glass. Placing a coverslip on top of the pollen dust and applying pressure with my finger, I shifted the glass to spread the pollen in a thin layer and glued the coverslip in place.
 
 
 And I got to observe the
 
 
 beautiful shape of its
 
 
 pollen grains
 
 
 which I never had experienced before!

 Petunia is genus of 35 species of flowering plants of South American origin, closely related to tobacco, cape gooseberries, tomatoes, deadly nightshades, potatoes and chili peppers in the same family, Solanaceae. The popular flower of the same name derived its epithet from the French, which took the word petun, meaning “tobacco,” from a Tupi–Guarani language.

After the tardigrade sample collection (mentioned in a previous post), the dry samples of lichen were soaked in water overnight. Then water samples and lichen samples were observed under the Foldscope. We could observe many micro organisms and also tardigrades. Some of these beautiful creatures appeared transparent under our Foldscope and some showed brown colouration.
